Bollate (MI), Italy – March 25, 2026 – Monteresearch s.r.l., an Italian drug-delivery company and part of EMS Group, today announced that it has secured an exclusive worldwide license from a leading U.S. academic research institution for intellectual property covering the repurposing of niclosamide for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection.
H. pylori infections affect up to 50% of the global population and are associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. Increasing antibiotic resistance represents a growing global health challenge, underscoring the need for alternative therapeutic strategies.
Niclosamide is an established molecule with a well-characterized safety profile and is approved in multiple countries for the treatment of tapeworm infections. Under the terms of the agreement, Monteresearch obtains exclusive global rights to advance development beyond the preclinical stage, manufacture, and commercialize niclosamide formulations for this new indication.
The company plans to leverage its gastro-retentive drug-delivery technologies to optimize local gastric exposure and enhance therapeutic effectiveness. By combining drug repurposing with advanced delivery systems, Monteresearch aims to explore a differentiated therapeutic approach to address some of the limitations of current antibiotic-based regimens.
